How Local TV News Could Improve and Why?
First I have to confess that I am not much of a TV viewer. I read and
watch news on the Internet and very rarely will I turn the TV on. The first
thing that annoys me a lot is the incredible amount of (not so good)
commercials that interrupt even the most interesting broadcast. I understand
that these TV channels need to make a living but does it have to be as
commercials are interrupted by news and not the other way around?
When I watch or read news I am also looking for something more than a lame report. I am expecting a voice, a reporter doing his job and analyzing a situation. I believe that journalism is about finding answers to public questions, truth behind scandal, and information that is of public interest. I feel that local TV tries to mimic the big networks and lack of imagination in offering a valuable service to the audience. Everything is about a bunch of anchors putting together a stream of news without any perspective. I believe that everything that happens locally is a result of something happening at a bigger scale. I feel that local media don’t watch the World and don’t open their audience to it. Everything is quite narrow-minded and doesn’t educate people. Which is I believe is the core mission of a journalist.
Last, I feel very uncomfortable the way local Tv news sensationalize every single event.
I remember last
winter when I learnt what a snow storm was according to King 5. Two inches of
snow turned into an endless storytelling involving reporters spread all over
Washington State who were analyzing snowflakes and trying to make forecast out
of their appearance for hours. The only thing that I needed to know was whether
I could drive to work safely or if I would need to make other arrangements. I would have preferred them to give me some
insight of events happening the same day that were much more critical.
To sum
everything up I am waiting for local TV to provide meaningful content that would
worth my time.
