Local News: It's Time to Focus and Get Happy

In a time where people can read and watch videos of breaking news the moment it happens, what can local TV news do to keep people interested? It’s not that people are reading less news. On the contrary, studies say that people are seeking more news…so what can local TV news do to keep up?

Segment for Different Times of Day
People go online and read news sorted into different categories: technology, health, business, headlines news, etc…why can’t TV news be the same way? Segmenting news into different categories would allow people to watch the topics that interest them and get all the news and information during that segment. 

I think it would be interesting to focus on different news segments based on the time of day. If business people are the early risers and news viewers, local TV news can focus more on reporting financial, business, world and breaking news sprinkled with traffic information. If the afternoon watchers tend to be women or retired people, local news should focus on topics about health, community, “feel good” clips and gardening segments (like Gardening with Ciscoe).

Get Happy and Engage
In my opinion, local news these days has definitely fallen into this horrible trend of “if it bleeds, it leads.” Sure. It’s easy to get sucked into stories of crime, murders and theft, but in the end, it just leaves you sad and paranoid about the world. 

Think about how people look for news these days…they don’t go out of their way to search for tragic and sad news stories. People search for stories that are relevant and engaging. I stumbled on a NPR Facebook study/article by Neiman Journalism Labs that uncovered 9 different types of engaging local news stories for social media which includes: place explainers, crowd pleasers, curiosity stimulators, news explainers, major breaking news, feel-good smilers, topical buzzers, provocative controversies and awe-inspiring visuals. Although these findings were topics people thought were engaging in social media, why can’t we use some of these stories for local TV news? Or maybe get some input from the audience about what they would like to hear?
