An Effective Campaign

Every day we are exposed to thousands of ads and only a small percentage of them actually strike a chord with us. Personally, an ad has to be extremely funny for me to remember it. I mean, sure I'll remember a sad or dramatic ad here and there, but it's the funny ads that get me to talk about them to others.

Recently, I have been asking friends if they have seen the Allstate Insurance T.V. commercials. Particularly the "mayhem" commercials. These ads are effective in the sense that 1) they make people laugh, 2) they relate to the audience, and 3) they humanize mayhem to be an actual villain.

Anytime a commercial makes people laugh, they are more inclined to talk about it amongst friends and family. This laughter leads to a more positive filling about the company - a better first impression. To me, the Allstate mayhem commercials are hysterical, but even better, they relate to the audience. The term "s*** happens" comes to mind because it's so true. People face unforeseen circumstances on a daily basis. Circumstances that can range from anything... a garage roof caving in due to heavy snow to a an accident caused by a distraught teen who's crush kissed another girl. Circumstances that can cause financial hardship at any given time. The best part of the commercials is the fact a man plays the role of mayhem. Mayhem is a villain and he is out to cause problems for anyone and everyone. There is no stopping mayhem because he shows up when you least expect him. That is where Allstate comes in... they can't prevent mayhem, but they can help reduce the financial impact mayhem could cause an individual. The entire concept of the mayhem campaign is crap happens to good people and you never know when it is going to hit. This is why you want to be in good hands with Allstate. They will prevent financial hardship whenever mayhem strikes, no matter the circumstance.

Now, I will be honest and say I do not use Allstate Insurance for two very good reasons. First, they aren't able to offer me a better rate I currently have with American Family. Secondly, my domestic partner was involved in an accident over ten years ago and he had to take Allstate to court. The other driver had Allstate Insurance, and even though their client was at fault, they refused to pay my partner what he was owed due to the accident. Long story short, my partner won his case and had his financial losses recovered. Upon winning, he had to sign an affidavit stating he would never use Allstate Insurance in the future. We share insurance and so I am unable to pursue Allstate as an option. However, the only reason I am with American Family is because of a recommendation from a friend. Without this word of mouth, I would never have considered using them because frankly, I find their T.V. commercials bland and forgettable.

Here are a few of my favorite Allstate mayhem commercials. Enjoy!
